World Press Freedom Day, observed annually on May 3rd, is a significant day honouring and upholding the fundamental principles of press freedom. It is a call to action, urging us to advocate for the independence of the media and the protection of journalists. It recognises the vital role that a free and independent press plays in upholding the public’s right to information and holding those in power accountable.
This day also honours those who risk their lives to pursue truth. The observance aims to foster global discussions on ways to combat censorship, ensure journalists' safety, and promote the transparent sharing of information.
“Raja Harischandra" released
Directed by Dadasaheb Phalke, the movie was shown to the public at Coronation Cinema in Girgaon, Mumbai. Its theatrical release occurred on May 3, 1913. The film played to packed houses for a week and its run was extended for another twelve days afterwards.
Subhash Chandra Bose formed ‘All India Forward Bloc’
On May 3, 1939, Subhash Chandra Bose founded the All India Forward Bloc, marking an important moment in India's struggle for independence. Dissatisfied with the tactics of the Indian National Congress, Bose created this new political group to escalate the fight against British colonialism.

On May 3, 1494, during his second journey to the New World, Christopher Columbus caught sight of Jamaica, signalling the onset of European influence in the area. This discovery, part of a broader expedition aimed at exploring uncharted territories and expanding Spanish control, resulted in Spain claiming the island.
The local Taino people, who named the island “Xaymaca," underwent significant upheaval as European colonists set up plantations and transformed the social and ecological dynamics of the region.

After the recommendation of UNESCO's General Conference in 1991, the United Nations General Assembly in 1993 established Press Freedom Day to be observed every year on May 3. The first Press Freedom Day was observed in 1994. The day is established with the intention of ensuring free4dom of press and also remembering and honouring the journalists who lost their lives in the line of duty.
Significance:
The theme of this year's Press Freedom Day is - A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the Face of the environmental crisis. The day helps in reiterating that the public must always have access to all kinds of information and the government should support it in creating a safe space for journalists to do their jobs. This day also honours the media organisations and journalists for their work in ensuring that the truth is told, and freedom of the press is respected at all times.
